a couple of GOP state reps from arizona are pushing a bill that would ban public schools from any teachings considered counter to democracy or Western civilization. it would also ban state colleges from forming groups based on race. so no more black student union or asian gay students for the fair treatment of lemmings.
Pearce, a Mesa Republican, said his target isn’t diversity instruction, but schools that use taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate students in what he characterized as anti-American or seditious thinking.
are we in the 18th century? soviet russia? it’s one thing to force people to speak english in your own restaurant, but this is state legislation.
the bill reads:
“A primary purpose of public education is to inculcate values of American citizenship. Public tax dollars used in public schools should not be used to denigrate American values and the teachings of Western civilization.”
that’s funny, because the u.s. department of education thinks this is what they do:
[The Education Department's] mission is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.
well then, should be really easy to be a global player when we are taught how racism no longer exists, how much everyone in the world loves us, and that we won the vietnam war. yeah, america!
and if you need one more reason to scream loudly in your cubicle:
“This bill basically says, ‘You’re here. Adopt American values,’ ” said Kavanagh, a Fountain Hills Republican. “If you want a different culture, then fine, go back to that culture.”
AARGGGGHHHHHH.
the worst part: the proposal was endorsed by a legislative panel, 9-6.
