An overlooked mid-90s album is the debut album by Cake, Motorcade of Generosity. Their later stuff is much better known (like somewhat played-out "The Distance") but their first album, released long before they were in alot of commercials and movie trailers is absolutely excellent.

I distinctly remember listening to White Town on the radio while playing with Legos in my living room circa 1997. I would have had no idea who that was until you mentioned their lyrics.

Isn't "Raising Sand" just a simply cool album? As an old guy, I'm a big Zeppelin fan, and I could listen to Alison Krauss sing the phone book, but I would have never imagined that Plant & Krauss together could've produced something like this.

@7: Mama say mama sa mama cu sa! I thought that line was originated by Michael Jackson, but it turns out he got it from someone else. It was also appropriated by the Bloodhound Gang. I will admit to compulsive Googling.

I actually like Rihanna too. Her songs strike me as kind of a little weird. In a good way. I like her use of sampling -- for example, when "Shut Up and Drive" first came out, I was like, "I REMEMBER this song from somewhere...where was it?!?!" Then I Googled it and found out that the guitar riff is from Blue Monday, which I kinda liked when I was in high school.

I may have said this before, but I'll say it again: for some reason, Rihanna reminds me of a fembot. I don't know why.

Have you heard the Marie Digby cover of "Umbrella?" I love it almost as much as her cover of Linkin Park's "What I've Done."

@8: I'll have to check it out, if only because I occasionally call my daughter "Rilo Kylie" for some reason.
