very belated generation kill post

since i’m a terrible blogger/person, i don’t find it important at all to write these posts in a timely manner, which is why you’re getting my thoughts on david simon’s new project, generation kill, almost a week late. oh well.

the most important thing you need to know is that i met david simon at tuesday’s screening. imagine some celebrity you’d be really excited to meet such as tina fey, matt damon, or paris hilton. david simon almost rises to that level for me (he created the wire, for godsakes). needless to say i was geeky and excited and quickly well-greased with wine. we talked about stupid stuff, and i didn’t ask for his autograph. i call the night a success.

btw, the miniseries screening was good, too. notable actors in it include bart bass from gossip girl, one of the brothers from the black donnellys, a guy who looks totally like adam from heroes (but isn’t), and many, many people who have guest starred on law & order at some point in their career (who hasn’t).

and should you watch the 7-part miniseries? if you like movies/books about combat, then of course. it’s one of the best of its ilk. if you’re more of a sex & the city kind of person, this is not groundbreaking enough to transcend the genre.

and a total shout out to miss nikki for hooking me up with this screening. look at her working her journalism thing w/ the book’s author. you take it to the house, girrrl.

wanted and wall-e reviews/recaps

reviews and recaps in 10 words or fewer.

wanted
recap: jolie crushes mcevoy. bullets curve. mcevoy becomes badass, crushes everyone.

review: gratuitously violent, but surprisingly funny. less dialogue, please.

4 stars.

questions for those who saw the movie: why are all assassins the same height? who would have thought mcevoy had a HOT BODY? a young edward norton? a mystical loom, really? who casted common as an assassin? why must there always be a nude angelina shot? (disclosure: i have not seen a mighty heart. too soon?)

wall-e
recap: battlestar meets brave new world meets terminator, but for kids.

review: lovely love story. way too many fat people.

4 stars.

questions: why does eve remind me of japanese anime? did anyone else think “cast away?” why is that peter gabriel song so damn catchy?

i will probably get pilloried for giving these two movies the same star ratings (out of five), but after being visually and aurally assaulted during wanted, it was hard to focus on wall-e’s slower pace. maybe i’d think differently if i saw the robot movie first, but that’s how the cookie crumbles.

if you’re wondering, i did a two-for-one double feature tonight–and, no, i didn’t find anyone to see wanted with me. i went alone. everyone else’s loss.

jeff goldblum on law and order: CI

whoa. whoa. whoa.

jeff goldblum will be replacing chris noth on criminal intent some time soon, and my mind is officially blown. i’m pretty sure this has been the biggest casting news of L&O since … ever? or maybe since chris noth decided to come back. definitely more huge than anthony anderson on the original and only slightly more strange than fred thompson running for president. somehow, though, this is not as awesome as mark-paul gosselaar playing a porn star on SVU (and jesus, what is going on w/ his hair on imdb?). but i digress.

goldblum will be making $250k per episode (for reference, mariska hargitay and chris meloni make $350k, some of the highest paid people in tv), and i have no idea if wheeler (julianne nicholson) will be back.
i haven’t seen goldblum lately, but i’m hoping he channels his character from independence day — geeky and misunderstood scientist, whose daddy is judd hirsh (otherwise now known as the father on numb3rs) and whose love interest is the present-day ELEANOR WALDORF(!)

and if your head is spinning after trying to follow all those names and references … congratulations. you’re normal.

no more gourmet sandwiches?

they sell plain jims, the vito, cocaine, and pitbulls. who knew.

what\'s that on your nose there?Jimmy Johns arrested on felony drug charges

Alabama Crimson Tide senior linebacker Jimmy Johns was dismissed from the football team and suspended from the University on Tuesday after being arrested on felony drug charges.

Johns was charged with five counts of distribution of cocaine and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

Police said Johns was “pretty wide open” to selling cocaine to students on and around the campus but tried to hide what he was doing from his teammates.

Undercover officers purchased cocaine from Johns five times in the last week and a half, Snyder said, and they arrested him at a gas station near his off-campus apartment where he lived alone.

Authorities who searched the apartment found about 10 grams of cocaine and ecstasy pills.

also …

Johns violated NCAA eligibility rules by putting his image on a website that advertised the sale of pit bulls.

Pictures of Johns in his Alabama uniform appeared on jimmyjohnspitbulls.com which violates NCAA bylaw 12.5.2.1 which states that, “an individual shall not be eligible for participation in intercollegiate athletics if the individual accepts any remuneration for or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind.”

The website jimmyjohnspitbulls.com was unable to be accessed as of Wednesday evening.

puts mike vick to shame.

there is something really wrong about this

he/she looks demonic. def not kosher.

the michigan daily makes the wall street journal

apparently, steve & barry’s totally screwed the daily over in advertising dollars, and the wall street journal is on the case.

For those doing business with Steve & Barry’s, it has become hard to reconcile the hype with reality. As the chain was inking high-profile licensing deals and attracting national media acclaim, small vendors across the country — along with overseas apparel manufacturers — say they were going unpaid, or enduring months of lag time between payments.

For instance, Steve & Barry’s is no longer allowed to advertise in the University of Michigan student newspaper, The Michigan Daily. The company was the paper’s largest advertiser for the 2006-07 school year.

Newspaper business manager and University of Michigan senior Elaina Bugli said the retailer fell months behind on $36,000 in bills and still owes $20,326 for ads bought more than a year ago.

“It’s by far our largest unpaid debt. They owe us more than we set aside for all unpaid debts for the year,” Ms. Bugli said. Meanwhile, Steve & Barry’s is a prominent licensee of merchandise for the University of Michigan, which ranks fourth in collegiate apparel sales.

that shit sucks b/c writers’ paychecks are definitely based on ad sales. turns out it’s easy to run a low-cost retail chain when you don’t pay any of your bills. go figure.

high five to jack for the heads up.

google shakeup

so “shakeup” might be exaggeration a little, but apparently people are up in arms about google’s new favicon (that little icon next to the URL. mine looks like an orange skunk). everyone has an opinion, and mine is that it rocks. google clearly heard about my anti-capitalization movement (use uppercase only if it’s required for clarity), and i support the move to simplicity. capital letters are only window dressing. spread the word.

speaking of favicons, two gripes:

1. google reader really needs to change theirs. it looks like an icon for some second-rate, pre-tetris children’s game. rounded corners? ick.

2. i HATE it when sites don’t have one. it makes my job really hard when my tab looks like this and all the icons are the same:

another belated post: friday’s hirshhorn party

dubbed one of the biggest, baddest parties in dc, the hirshhorn after hours was chockful of DCites dressed in their sunday’s best (read: dresses clearly not bought in DC, accompanied by oversized purses stuffed with flats or flip flops).

new-to-me music was played, overpriced drinks were drunk, inaccessible art was seen, and too-cool-for-school fun was had. i even ran into my boss.

i was lame and didn’t take any pictures of the event itself, but this hipster blog had a much nicer camera and did the whole thing better justice.

what i did take pics of, however, was me eating at ben’s chili bowl afterward. check out the food, the crew, and me, workin’ it.
